In a matchup of the first game for the weeknight NABA 2021 league back in early May, it was only fitting the last two teams standing were the same, with a repeat matchup of Dodgers ace Joe Borrego and Cubs ace Will Bartos.
The highly anticipated matchup didn't let down with the intensity as high as a school board mask mandate meeting, with lots of hooping and hollering with everyone hyped up for the game. With an almost sellout crowd of 86 people, the home crowd really got behind the home team Cubs and after a first inning and second inning manufactured runs by the Dodgers, the Cubs came back with two in the bottom of the third highlighted by Jarin Dorchinez triple to left center scoring SS Jorge Lovatos. Dorchinez would then come around to score on a Tyler Lewan ground out. The Cubs would also add three more runs in the bottom of the fourth after three straight hits by Juan Esparza, who then stole second, RBI double by Nick Besman, single by Lovatos and then an RBI single by Dorchinez to score Besman and then during a "sandlot" pickle, Lovatos scampered home from third, providing the fifth run for the Cubs.
The Dodgers battled back in the top of the 7th after a leadoff walk by Nick Bumstead, followed by speedster Eddie Belk with a ground out to pitcher Dorchinez, a pop-up to Lewan, and then things got dicey like a game of craps. A fly-ball to right field that would have ended the game was dropped, allowing Nick Bumstead to score to bring the score to 5-3. Sparks then hit a single to left, followed by a walk to the leadoff batter, and then a single to left by Parker Bullard to bring the Dodgers within one run. Dorchinez buckled down and got the next batter, Walker Ives to strikeout on a 1-2 pitch to secure the championship for the Cubs.
"we knew this was going to be a battle, and an exciting battle between us", said Bartos "long time pitching matchup against Borrego has been fun over the last number of years, so I was glad to face him tonight".
"It was another great night out here tonight, the weather was great, the fans were great, and this is why baseball is great", said CF Mike "Flo" Florenza.
The Cubs tallied 8 hits, against the Dodgers 6, which everyone knew going into the game it was going to be a pitchers duel game.
