More Stellar Pitching, Defense and Timely Hitting Key Win

Denver, CO  The Colorado Aces brought their 4-0 record into a game against the Blacksox on Sunday, June 14th at North High School and did not disappoint, coming away with a 9-3 triumph over the previously 2-2 'Sox.

The Aces used the same formula that got them to 4-0 with  excellent pitching, good defense and timely hitting to put away the overmatched Blacksox.  The 'Sox only fielded 8 players on this day as their 9th apparently had a late night with some hotties and could not make it out of bed.  With that being said, the Aces took advantage of their undermanned foe by knocking out 17 hits and hold a previously potent lineup to only 3 runs, two of which were earned.

Dan Clemens started and won his 4th game of the year, stifling the Blacksox with his usual array of pitches and keeping everyone off balance during his 6 innings of work.  Keith Losey came on in relief after Clemens had to head to his "Day Job" and coach our youth to more victories in their own games.  Losey made his first appearance of the year and did not look like he missed a beat as he went 3 strong inning to get the save only allowing 2 hits and an unearned run in his time on the mound. Clemens struck out a season high 8 batters and Losey added two more to show how good the Aces arms were on this day.  The tandem only allowed the Blacksox 7 hits on the day and there was never an inning that looked like it could turn into a crooked number.

The Aces bats were not on fire on this day but they made the big hits when they needed to.  They took off in the first inning dropping a 4 spot on the Blacksox with a string of great at bats with two outs.  Kyle Paulson and Eric Meyer made outs to start the game.  Paulson with a groundout to 1st and Meyer with a flyout to short left field that the Blacksox shortstop was able to go get.  That's when the bats came alive for the 4-0 Aces.  Andy Philemon would single to get things going.  Dennis White would follow, reaching on an error by the 2nd baseman.  Jason Leue would follow White with a single that scored Philemon from 2nd and the parade was at the first turn.  Starting Pitcher, Dan Clemens, would draw a walk loading the bases and then Keith Losey happened.  Losey crushed a ball over the left fielder's head and that would clear the bases leaving Losey on second with 3 RBI and the Aces with a 4-0 lead.  Mitch Gross would battle for 7 pitches before grounding out to end the rally.

The Blacksox would make it a 4-2 game in the top of the third as Clemens would get let down by a couple of miscues by his defense but that would not deter the Aces on this day.  The Aces would answer the Blacksox 2 runs with three of their own in the bottom of the third.  Meyer would lead off with a solid single to right and Philemon would follow with a single of his own,. A wild pitch by the Blacksox starting pitcher would put runners on 2nd and 3rd and that would leave the stage open for Dennis White to do what he does, knock in runs.  White would destroy a 2-1 pitch to the right center field gap scoring both Meyer and Philemon, giving the Aces a 6-2 lead.  But the scoring wasn't done in this inning just yet.  After Leue and Clemens would make outs, Losey came through again, lacing a single to left that scored White and ended the inning with the Aces holding a comfortable 7-2 lead.

The Aces would add a single run in the 4th when Sherman Lodge would draw a leadoff walk, promptly steal second, move to third on a wild pitch and score on Chris Schneider's sacrifice fly to deep right field.  The Blacksox would scratch out a run off of Losey in the 8th when the Aces defense would make another rare miscue after a leadoff double that was crushed to right center field by the Blacksox best player, who made several run saving catches in the outfield.  The Aces would close out the scoring by plating Philemon in the 8th.  He led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on pinch hitter Shane Saunders double to right that ended up with Saunders being throw out at third on a questionable call after the Blacksox threw the ball around the yard.  Saunders RBI would make the final score 9-3, Aces and send them to their 5th win in a row to start the 2015 NABA 35W season.

Contributions were made up and down the lineup in the field and at the plate as catcher Mitch Gross would call a superb game behind the plate and reserve outfielder, Pat Poppen would make the catch of the game in left on a long drive in the 8th to maintain the Aces lead along with a slew of good at bats from the Aces outfielder.

The Aces next game is next Sunday when they have a 12:30 tilt against Cricket Wireless at Brent Mayne Field.
