Beat Grizzlies and Greensox, Tie Greensox and Lose to Mudcats

Arvada and Aurora, CO  The Colorado Bombers have had a very busy schedule the last couple of weeks and that is a very good reason that this reporter has not had time to write any game stories because the team had games on Saturday and Sunday the last 2 weekends.

A summary of the two weekends looks like this:

Saturday August 2nd  Bombers 19, Grizzlies 13

Sunday August 3rd     Mudcats  10, Bombers  6

Saturday August 9th   Bombers 9,   Greensox 9

Sunday August 10th   Bombers 24, Greensox 7

They also finished the suspended game from June 18th and ended up losing that contest by a 24-19 score.

All in all it was a pretty respectable stretch of baseball for the Bombers.  During the 2nd and 3rd weekend they had all hands on deck and beat a very good Grizzlies team going away and gave the Mudcats all they wanted in the Sunday tilt.  The team was a little short on players during the 9th and 10th weekend due to late summer family vacations and the like but battled through the short roster and found their hitting stroke on Sunday in beating the Greensox.

The major disappoitment for the 2 weekends was the 9-9 tie against the Greensox.  The Bombers went to the 8th inning of that game with a 9-4 lead and let it slip away by giving up 4 runs in the 8th and 1 in the 9th to get the tie.  They come out of this stretch in 6th place in the 35W League and have risen from the ashes of their terrible start to the season and stand at 6-8-1 on the season with 2 games to go.  If they beat the Grizzlies on Sunday and the Shockers in the last game of the season, they can improve from a 0-5 start all the way to .500 on the year.  They can finish anywhere from 4th place to 6th place in the League and would like to get the highest seed possible for the upcoming playoffs.

Some highlights from the 4 game stretch:

August 2nd:  Dennis White found his hitting stroke going 3-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI on the day.  Pat Poppen got the first hit of his short Bombers career with a solid single to right in the 4th inning.  Sherman Lodge continued his hot hitting going 4-4 in the game with 5 RBI.  Keith Losey knocked out 3 hits and stole 3 bases on the day.  Jeremy Sparks came to play and threw out a line of 3-4 at the plate with 2 runs scored and a couple of RBI himself.

August 3rd:  Keith Losey pitched a strong 7 innings giving up only 4 earned runs on the day and keeping the hot hitting Mudcats off the base paths for most of the day and giving the Bombers every chance to come away with a win.  Newcomer Craig Olson got into the act by pitching an inning in relief of Losey and looked like he could be a nice addition to the Bombers pitching staff heading to the playoffs.  Eric Meyer went 2-4 with a run and a couple of stolen bases on the day out of the 2 hole.  Losey had 2 big RBI on the day and threw out 2 hits as well.  Ian Newton blasted a 2-2 curveball to left that looked like it might leave the yard but hit the fence on the fly and ended up with a triple but was erased on a great throw from the outfield while rounding 3rd.  Bob Prashaw filled in at catcher since Losey was on the mound and called a terrific game without a single wild pitch or past ball.

August 9th:  Bill MacDonald did what Bill MacDonald always does battling for a 9 inning complete game and deserved a better fate than a 9-9 tie as he pitched masterfully throughout but was let down in the 8th by a few fielding miscues by the Bombers.  Tony Walsh was inserted into the 4 hole during this stretch and came through with a couple of RBI on the day.  Chris Schneider battled through a sore leg to get a hit and score a run in the game.

August 10th:  There was a bevy of stars on this day as everone got into the act at the plate.  Kyle Paulson score 4 runs on a hit and 4 walks, Eric Meyer reached base 5 times and scored 2 runs, had 3 hits  stole 2 bases and knocked in 3.  Jeremy Sparks went 4-5 with 4 RBI and also walked twice to get himself on base in 6 out of 7 plate appearances.  Tony Walsh came through in the 4 hole with 6 RBI during a 3-4 game and scored 4 runs.  Keith Losey went 3-6, scored 4 runs and knocked in 2 more.  Dennis White continued his resurgance with a stellar 5-5 day scoring 4 times and driving in 2 more.  Sherman Lodge is on the Fire Department's "Most Wanted List" right now after continuing his hot streak with a 4-5 day that included 2 runs scored and 4 RBI.  Chris Schneider and Pat Poppen each contributed a hit to the cause in the 24-7 thrashing of the Greensox.  Keith Losey pitched a 7 inning complete game and was never in a lot of trouble.  By his own admission, he left a couple of sliders up in the zone and that cost him the majority of the 7 runs he allowed on the day.

All in all the Bombers should be fairly happy with their 4 games in 2 weekends stretch.  They have moved from last place in the League to 6th and with a strong finish against good teams to get all the way to 4th.

This week's game is on Sunday morning at 9:00 A.M. against the Grizzlies at Arvada West High School.  It should be a fun ride heading to the playoffs!
